The origin of Thane SPCA lies in the desperation and ultimate vision of some dedicated animal lovers who came together to end the miserable plight of animals in the district of Thane.

Way back in 2002 some like minded people from Thane began their endeavour by bringing medical aid and relief to street animals on the roads itself. Thane, even though a satellite city of Mumbai, had no awareness of animal welfare and animal rights. Sick and injured animals had absolutely no access to modern medical care. Two years of serving on the streets bore fruits in the form of Thane SPCA Emergency Animal Care Centre on a plot of land lent to us by philanthropist Dr. Nanjibhai Khimjibhai Thakker.

TSPCA is a purely private initiative in action. We did not wait for Government grants or land to start our work. The land which we were allowed to use was a stony barren piece of land where nothing but wild grass grew, that too sparsely. There was no electricity or water connection. We built the place brick by brick. We brought power and water connection with private funding. What started as a single shed with one cage and one veterinarian, gradually grew to be able to hold 6 small animals and now can hold 40 small and 6 large animals with a separate quarantine ward, a wild bird enclosure, a monkey enclosure and a pretty garden.

Initially there was no toilet for our staff, so we built a toilet and bathroom. Gradually we built a separate office room, a waiting room for guests, a changing room for our staff and a shed under which owners can sit with their pets while waiting for their turn at the O.P.D. We now have a separate Operation Theatre with all facilities to perform emergency surgeries.
